Down Came the Fire Pit

Up Goes the New Summer Kitchen

The wind came up, trees went over the power lines. Despite all the work the electric company did in the past year for clearing the lines and trimming back limbs, one lone rotted tree did them in. It fell over the lines and out the power went for two days. Imagine that!!

We cooked over the fire pit that Kat had built and as the fire simmered our stew, our brains began to meld. We had planned to build a summer kitchen connected to the house. We calculated the taxes for an attachment that day and decided to build a stand-alone building powered by wood.

Having the sawmill and a few extra boards around it did not take long to get started. First we had to come up with a large cook top and an oven.

Note that in the following pictures, most if not all the parts are from salvage from over the years.

Even the old woodstove from the house was put back into service for the new wood fired outdoor oven. Temperatures can be controlled from 250F to 400F.

We restacked the old fire pit rock around the new large cook top. It cooks hot. The large aluminum top allows for different heat zones.

A new round fire pit was made with the remaining stones and I built a ring holder, again from salvage for the large cast iron laundry pot.

The main fire is in the center of the stove area.
The frame goes up. The main poles are skip peeled pine logs that have been curing for a couple years.
It does not take long for the leaves to change. The roof is on ready for the Board and Batten siding.
